Built in 1895 with a design influenced by the renowned Stanley Thompson.

Norfolk Golf & Country Club is a semi-private 9-hole golf course that was built in 1895 with a design influenced by the renowned Stanley Thompson. Norfolk Golf and Country Club is a proud member of the Stanley Thompson Society. This course is a true hidden gem in the heart of Norfolk County. This golf course is a must-play for visitors to the area and a favourite for locals and members.

In 1900 a small frame clubhouse was built, just north of what is now the first green. The club had lockers and a wash basin with a bucket underneath the basin for players to freshen up after their round of golf. If golfers needed more water, members had to go down to the stream below (now known as the Lynn River) to bring up pails of water.

In 1911 the club purchased 25 acres of land from Union Trust Co. at a cost of $2,500. This purchase marked the beginning of construction of the course we now enjoy so much. The golf course was incorporated in 1912, and a new club house was built. The cost of this new endeavour was $4,000 and it officially opened June 1, 1914. Just 2 months later the world would be plunged into World War 1. The corporate name of the club became Norfolk Golf and Country Club and women that were previously banned since late 1880s, were made part of the club when it became incorporated in 1912.

The first pro shop, which was in the basement level of the 1914 club house, became the gathering point for those who wanted to golf our historic grounds. Golfers carried their clubs and there were separate entrances for men and women. Norfolk Golf and Country Club doubled size in 1922 as an additional 25 acres was purchased from Deeth and Sons which added to the original property. Smaller parcels of land were obtained in subsequent years to bring the size of the course to a total of the current 53 acres.

In the 1930s a major decision was made to change the original layout of the N.G.C.C. for 3 reasons. The first reason was to eliminate four par 4 holes that were parallel to each other and had overlapping fairways. The second decision was to provide a second permanent par 5 hole. The final decision was to establish a permanent layout to accommodate a future watering system. The revised layout was finalized in 1935 and was in play a year later.
